Mercedes-Benz W203 C-200 Kompressor (2005) Suspension Overhaul

A Cartisan customer recently requested for an inspection for his Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The model was a C-200 Kompressor manufactured in 2005.

The car had hardly driven 40,000km despite being over a decade old and the customer complained of a rattling sound emanating from the left front side of the car while driving. Even on smooth roads!

Cartisan service team carried out an inspection of the condition of the car. After conducting the driving test, the front shock absorbers were inspected and it was seen that there was an oil leak.

With the customer’s approval, the car was then taken to a Cartisan Preferred Workshop where the entire suspension system was dismantled and inspected.

First, the bolts connecting the steering ball joint, link rods, lower arms to the wheel hub and shock absorber are removed. The wheel hub is disconnected from the shock absorber and other control arms. The shock absorber which is also bolted to the chassis near the engine bay is removed.

This gives the technicians easy access to the different components so that they can thoroughly inspect the condition.

From the inspection, it was determined that the following components would need replacement to get the Mercedes to handle as good as new –

  1. Front Shock Absorbers
  2. Suspension mounting
  3. Dust Boot & Bound stopper
  4. Link Rod
  5. Steering Ball Joint & Tie Rod
  6. Control Arms – Upper & Lower

A quotation was provided to the customer. The customer approved and the service was underway.

The image below shows the different components that would require replacement.

The labeled parts are completely removed from the car and replaced with brand new suspension components from Sachs.

Upper Control Arm – the upper control arms work with the lower control arm to control the vertical movement of the wheel hub.

Lower Control Arm – the lower control arms work with the upper control arms to control the vertical movement of the wheel hub.

Steering Ball Joint & Tie Rod End – the steering ball joints & tie rod ends control the pivotal/turning motion of the wheel hubs.

Link Rod – the link rods are connected to the balancing rod which maintains the steering balance of the car.

Front Strut & Spring – the front shock absorbers are combined with the spring, spring seat, dust boot, bound stopper and mounting rubber to form a strut kit. The spring and shock absorber act in unison to control the motion & balance of the car. The bound stopper acts is a damper in this assembly and the dust boot prevents dust, impurities from settling on the inner portions of the shock absorber.

After replacement of these parts the car is then lowered to the ground and parked in the washing bay to get a complete body wash.

Next, the car was taken to a wheel alignment center to get all 4 wheels aligned and balanced.

After the service is completed, the car is taken for a test drive to confirm the work was carried out successfully.
