A customer who owns a 2012 BMW X1 xDrive20d recently requested Cartisan to diagnose a squeaking sound that was coming from the engine. The sound would emanate from the engine bay at all times while the engine was cranked. It was also noticed that under high speeds, the gear shifts weren’t smooth and precise.
The car had clocked about 75,000km.
The Cartisan service team arrived at the customer’s doorstep at the specified date and time and carried out an inspection.
The bonnet was popped open and the engine was cranked. Belt lubricating spray was sprayed onto the drive belt of the car while the engine was running. As soon as the belt, tensioner and idler pulleys were sprayed, the sound faded and once the lubricant dried out, the squeaking sound was prominent once again.
The drive belt was worn and along with replacing the belt, it is was recommended to replace the tensioner and idler pulleys as well. Physical inspection of the crankshaft pulley showed that it had to be replaced too.
A quote was given to the customer for the replacement of the following parts –
- Drive Belt
- Idler Pulley
- Tensioner Pulley
- Crankshaft Pulley
The customer accepted the quote and the work was underway.
First, the idler and tensioner pulleys were loosened. This allowed the technician to slowly remove the drive belt wrapped around the various pulleys attached to the engine block.
Once the drive belt was removed, the idler, tensioner and crankshaft pulleys were unscrewed and removed from the engine.
The brand new pulleys along with the drive belt were then fitted to the engine.
The car was then taken for a test drive to confirm that the work was done successfully. The gear shifts were smooth and on time, shifting up at around 2,000rpm and the squeaking sound which was emanating from the engine bay had subsided.
The customer was satisfied after driving his car post the service!
